Sadly dog biting
can become a serious problem for both dogs and dog owners and most of
the time the problem gets ignored until it is too late. If dog biting
is left untreated as a puppy it will stay with your dog as an adult.
This puts you dog's life at serious risk because
if he were to ever bite a stranger he may find himself being put to
sleep in a dog pound.
Thankfully this whole scenario can be avoided by
early intervention and through proper dog training. However to truly
get to the root of your dog biting problem we need to look at the
cause.
Biting is a way for your dog to show dominance in
a relationship. He is trying to show his place in your family pack.
This starts early when your dog is a puppy because he wants to see
where he stands in the hierarchy. This may seem cute, but it has a more
serious meaning.
If you let your puppy continue to bite he will get
the impression that he is the dominant leader of the family and that he
is the master instead of you. As he grows into an adult he may bite
even more to show off his dominance and this may lead to injury for
yourself, a family member or a visitor. So it is critical to stop dog
biting as early as possible.
You can do this by showing your own dominance
while your dog is a puppy. This can be done by using your hand as a
mouth and clamping on the scruff of the neck of your puppy to tell him
that you are the leader of the pack. Of course this does not need to be
done in anger. Just a gentle yet firm message.
You may also try reprimanding your puppy with a
strong and firm 'NO' when he starts to bite. His biting is sort of like
a child when trying to figure out what the boundaries are are what he
can get away with. It is very important to set the record straight
early on that you are in charge and not him.
