Dog Potty Training

We know there are guides for puppy potty training, but what on earth do you do when your furry companion isn't a puppy anymore? I mean, you cannot teach an old dog new tricks right? Thankfully, that is just a misconception. You certainly can have successful dog potty training with an older dog as well as a puppy. You just need to do a few things differently, just as you would teach an adult differently than you would teach a child.

I have compiled all that I know about adult dog potty training into a list of tips that should help you along the way.

1. When you potty train a puppy you start by teaching them NOT to go potty in the house. However, when teaching an older dog, you want to teach them to go potty outside. So instead of teaching him what not to do, you go straight to teaching what to do. This is because it is much easier on both you and your furry companion to teach him how to do something as opposed how to stop doing something.

2. Instead of just letting him roam the backyard it is important to give him a specific spot or corner on which you want him to do his business. Going to the same spot each time will help him to catch on much quicker. That way, when you walk him to his poop spot he knows what you want him to do.

3. It is critical for your dog potty training efforts that you develop a potty command and use it every time you take him out to the spot to go potty. This way he will start to associate the potty command, the spot and the action.

4. Make sure that you fully clean up any hint of a potty accident in your home. If your dog catches a whiff of urine in your home he may get confused and think that is the place to go potty again. To solve this problem be sure to deodorize the area so no smells remain in your carpet or floor.

5. To make sure your dog does not have an 'accident' overnight consider having him sleep in a crate or at least in a small confined area. This is because dogs do not want to mess up their sleep area. That will help your dog to learn how to 'hold it' at night and he will be grateful to relieve himself when you take him outside to his spot in the next morning.

6. Just like you would do with your own children, limit food and water right before bed time. This will help prevent accidents. Also, be sure to take him out potty right before going to sleep.

7. Don't make it complicated for him to get outside to go potty. If you have a doggie door, that is the best option because he can go when ever he feels the urge. However, if that is not an option you may want to consider hanging a bell that your dog can reach. You can teach him how to use it by ringing the bell right before you take him out to go potty each time. Soon he will realize that if he rings the bell, you will come and take him out.

Don't let anyone tell you that you cannot teach and old dog new tricks. You certainly can, but you just need to take a slightly different approach than you would with a puppy. Adult dog potty training can be done and it can be fulfilling for both you and your furry companion.
