So you brought your puppy home and all was
good and well until she went to the bathroom on your beautiful carpet.
This is a very common scenario and the only way to keep it from
repeating over and over again is to learn how to train your dog to go
to the bathroom outside instead of inside.
You will want your puppy to become
comfortable with her new surroundings and you also want to teach her
how and where to do her business the right way. It is not always easy,
but there are some things you can do to get started down the right
track.
Most importantly, when learning how to train
your dog it is vital to commit to a routine with your puppy until he or
she is completely trained. Remember that training a puppy takes a lot
of time and patience to do right.
The best way to potty train your dog is by
using the crate method. If you do not have a dog crate, I highly
recommend you get one. Get one that is expandable so it can grow along
with your puppy. The trick to crate training is that dogs wont soil
their sleeping area. So when you put your puppy in the crate they are
forced to 'hold it' until you take them out of the crate to go outside.
Make sure to take your puppy out at least
every 2 hours so he can relieve himself. Also, remember your puppy was
not meant to be in the crate all day long either. Take him out every
hour or so to play.
See, learning how to train your dog isn't so
difficult. There are tools and aids to help you along the way. When you
take your puppy out of the crate and go outside wait until he or she
does its business and then praise your dog and give him positive
reinforcement. If you are standing out there for a while and nothing
happens, go ahead and take your puppy back in and try again in an hour.
Make sure not to feed your puppy in the late
evening and make sure he or she has gone to the bathroom before you put
her in the crate for the night. As you may have realized learning how
to train your dog requires commitment. Putting things on a routine will
make things easier, such as always taking her outside at certain times,
feeding her at certain times, etc...
Just keep staying consistent and it will pay
off. If you want to make sure you are doing all your training correctly
and cannot afford a trainer, I highly recommend you check out Dog Train
Academy. It is all online and really teaches you the tricks of the
trade that makes training your dog a breeze. Plus, at less than ten
bucks a month it is a steal compared to other programs I have come
across.
Just imagine, pretty soon you will no longer
need to worry about coming home to a mess on your carpet.
